N2 - The methods of measuring optical activity of solid polymers are reviewed. The extreme difficulty of the methods is exhibited in serious drawbacks of the traditional statistical methods. The invention of HA UP (high accuracy universal polarimeter) method by Kobayashi et al has opened a way to perfect measurements of gyro-optical properties of any solids.
$\begingroup$ "optical activity" is a problematic term if only because it implies EM radiation in the visible range. Unfortunately there isn't a simple general term. Though you could say, "can chiral macroscopic objects rotate the plane of EM waves of a suitable wavelength?" $\endgroup$ – matt_black Jan 12 at 13:59
What are chiral centers? A chiral centre is an atom that has four different groups bonded to it in such a manner that it has a nonsuperimposable mirror image. The term Optical Activity. the ability of a medium to cause rotation of the plane of polarization of optical radiation (light) passing through it.

A large part of the organic molecules are chiral compounds having optical activity. For our tests we have chosen readily available substances that have a marked optical activity: sucrose (common sugar), glucose (dextrose), fructose (levulose).

Optical activity can be induced in NPs in several different ways, including via the direct interaction of achiral NPs with a chiral molecule. This results in circular dichroism (CD) in the region of the intrinsic absorption of the NPs. This interaction in turn affects the optical properties of the chiral molecule.

Chirality and optical activity arise from lack of symmetry, where an object is non-superimposable on its mirror image. Optical isomers or enantiomers have similar physico-chemical properties but only differ in their optical activity and their interaction with biological systems.
This effect can be described by different refractive indices for left‐ and right‐handed waves and yields a negative index in extreme cases. For Louis Pasteur, the two distinctive properties of dissymmetric systems, optical activity and chiral discrimination, provided prime evidence for a Divine origin to the universe.

Conventional CD is a special case of our general theory. When the EM field is CPL, the optical chirality is C ¼ 2Ue!=c, where c is the speed of light and positive
